Isn't that quite simple thing that you go and buy from a shop one bottle of Erikeeper glue or glue stick and there you have your glue. And thats it.

Well you are right that you can buy conveniently that kind of glue almost from any shop. But when restorer or conservator speaks about glue they might quite offen speak about animal glues. Animal glue category includes glues like hide glue, fish glue, rabbit skin glue, bone glue and sturgeon glue. The first part of the animal glue name reveals that from what kind of animal it has been made from. For example fish glue has made from fishes gristles and fishbones by boiling.

Many of these animal glues are sold by small, hard kind of pearl or grystals forms from which they are made to useful forms with water bath. Every animal glue has a bit different main use. For example a rabbit skin glue is prefered to have best use in water gilding, the sturgeon glue is to be used mostly in art conservation and fish glue is to be used in work where you need a slightly longer processing time than what for example hide glue or rabbit skin glue has. And we sure remember hide glue from ingredient of animal skin glue paint.

There you have different variety of animal glues.

Whit wood dust and glue, whatever the glue is animal glue or PVAc-glue, you can make wood dust filler that you can use to fill the wooden furniture's holes.

Before and after animal glues cleaning. Wouldn't it be much simpler to go and buy that ready glue bottle from the shop? Well my friend, one of the advantages of animal glues is that they are easier to clean and remove with boiled hot water than PVAc-glues are, in which Erikeeper glue belongs. A small and thin layer of PVAc- glue is realatively easy to remove but when there is a larger and thicker area of that PVAc-glue, well then that amount of working time to remove it shall increase. While in fluid or in active the Erikeeper is dissolving in water but when it has dryed it doesn't dissolve anymore so well to water than what animal glues does.

And again those restorers will stink a bit with they glues beacause when those animal glues are active they sure have theirs characteristic smell which in some shall separate from each others more and some less.

This was my prattles at this time.
See you next time
-Protoni

Merry Christmas!

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/merry-christmas

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/merry-christmas#comments

Uncategorized

Wishing a merry and peaceful Christmas to every one!Best Christmas wishes from super team of SeepiakettuProtoni ja Laura [...]

Wishing a merry and peaceful Christmas to every one!

Best Christmas wishes from super team of Seepiakettu
Protoni ja Laura

Protoni's working diary - Renovation of little table

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-working-diary-renovation-of-little-table

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-working-diary-renovation-of-little-table#comments

Uncategorized

Well hello again. It is me Protoni who is writing here again.

My friend got working order to make resurface finishing to the small table that had black paint on it. First there was a negotiation with the client what kind of surface finishing should be used. Finally it was settled that after removing the black paint the table's surface would be treated with the stain, shellack and carnouba-beewax mixture wax.

First my friend did test removings to see witch and how long it would take to black paint to react to the different solutions. After tests my friend decided to use two dinfferent kind of type solvent poultice to table's sides. First she placed ethanol moisted hand towel paper for the small area of the table side and after that the moisted hand towel papers were covered and wrapped tight with plastic wrap and after that the poultice was let to effect about 45 minute. After that 45 minute she removed the softened black paint's top layer with blunt head and side sandwich knife and with the tea spoon. Sometimes with this kind of works the simplest tools are the best one. The second puoltice was made kind of the same way as previous but with the acetone and was let to effect about half an our and after that the rest of the paint were removed.

And why on earth she did this complicated? Wouldn't it be just easier take all the black paind down with only using ethanol or acetone poultice? And wouldn't it be better to take down the whole paint surface in one shot?

Well the first thing to keep in mind, when removing paint with this kind of solvent, is that both ethanol and acetone are quicly evaporating solvents and thats why it is better to work a small area with them. And then there happened to be a warm weather and because of that it was also better to work small areas at the time. Otherwise my friend would have most likely ended up to make a bit of pointless job if she would have used a solvent poultice in larger area and when she would have started removing solvent softened paint, the softened paint would had dryed and hardened back in the end side of the large covered area when the solvent would had evaporated. The ethanol in the other hand didn't quite well effected the paint's bottom layer in those table side areas and the acetone would have required a longer time to effect and would have probably manage to dry on that time even if she would have done as tight poultice as possible. So with that reason also it was better to do the paint removing in two parts.

At the table's deck my friend had noticed that the black paint did come off with using only ethanol. And so the paint come off from the table's deck quite nicely using only ethanol poultice, exept some small parts but with sanding those were managed to get off. Sometimes this surely is a bit of mystery industry.

After when the black paint had been removed and the beautiful oak wood had been revealed under the paint and the wood surface had been sanded, it was water staining turn. My friend used dark oak and a bit (mode)brown water stain mix. Then after staining it was application of shellac turn. Shellac varnish is mixture of ethanol and a lac bug's (named Kerria lacca) feces (which turn in the resin). Ugh phyi... those restores sure do use weird substance on their works. Shellac does dry fast after the application but you must wait one hour to make second application so that the shellac surface turns out to be good. You will make those shellac application about 10 times, sometimes less and sometimes more depens on what kind of polish level you want. In this case she made the shellac application 8 times. After every few shellac layer the surface shall sanded lightly with really fine sandpaper.

But oh dear what a missery happened! At the first sanding layer of shellac my friend did used a bit too rough sandpaper and that's why there came a little tiny areas on the table desk where the stain did sanded a bit away. My friend tryed first make a reapairs on those small areas but they started to bother her too much and she ended up to remove those shellac layers and stain that she already made and she made the whole staining and shellacking from the begining. Sometimes this kind of things can happen even the best of us. In the second time the shellac sandings went well and after the eight shellack layer application there was the last working stage to apply the wax to the table surface which was made with Liberon colourless antique wax.

At the end of the renovation together with my friend enjoyed just being at the palcony.
This was my prattles at this time.
See you next time
-Protoni

p.s. It has been sometime since my last blog writings but that is sometimes part of the creative blog dog's life. This time I would like to present something about decorative and faux painting.

My friend studiet furniture and house painting in Haukipudas at Osao. My friend has an special interesting for a faux painting and they did practice decorative and faux painting bit more than avarage class. In faux painting its meant to do imitation painting, with different kind of technique, to gain different material surface, such as wood, marble and other stone marerials, on the the furniture surface. If the the surface is meant to make older looking that technique is called patination (patina)

Decorative and faux paintings has not only used in furniture but to the buildings as well. For example sometimes in the building has been used both real marble and faux painting marble besid or sometimes some room has architectual mouldings made with real valuable timber tree and some other room might have the same mouldings made with faux painting. In fact in the Finland's biggest circus house, which sometimes comes with the name of parliament house of Finland, has been used both the real marble and marble imitation technique named scagliola beside at the same room. And what is the great mindset to use together these real and imitated stone if you have had money to use real materials? That is someting that I don't know. Sometimes it might have been the restriction of money but there might have also something to do with the professional pride and the willingness to show how good you can be in your work area. Your skills never develope without practicing it.

In faux painting there is available all sorts of brushes and other equipments like shape cutted rubber putty knife and bird feathers. However some of the most impressive faux paintings has been done by using only painter's own fingers. Sure those human fingers are useful. Especially when they give me a delicious food or when they scratch me behing my ears.

There has been many fantastic decorative painting tradition in Nordic countries. A lot of the decorative painting's design was absorded from abroad but each Nordic countiries own nature (like blueberry and other berries), religion stories and ordinary village life offered many decorative painting patterns as well. For example area in Torniojokilaakso did create its own unique colorful decorative painting tradition

Decorative painters in Finland do separate in two groups; church painters and itinerant painters. At least in Finland many decorative painters had tendency to drunkenness. My friend's teacher told about one building decorative painting where there was clearly to see when decorative painter had took a few pint of alcohol and when painter had been in bit hangover. In this building decorative painting was made in some space with a big and wild handed painted pattern in which was followed a relatively small and shaked pattern. These painters could have also relieve their repentance to the painted aphorisms like; "Please don't punish me my Lord even though I'm drunk." She clened the seat frame from the dust and with mineral spirit, water and fairy mixture she carefully cleaned small white paint drops. Fairy in that mixtion does work as an emulgator. In other words emulgator is substance that makes possible mixing the water and oil based substance together. Well that mixtion sure did smell bad. Phyi! And then she dare to complain that I do smell bad after roll over the ground.

My friend got some source book for her backround. She found the most interesting upholstery book from 1920s.

The arm chair's back rest had a more simpple procedure. The originally back seat's fabrick was first vacuumed with the lowes suction power. The fabrick was vacuumed once because from the sock that was place around the vacuum cleaner's mouthpiece you could see that with the dust that came from the back rest included some pilling from the original fabrick and she didn't do the second vacuuming so that the original fabrick would not lose moore its texture. Between the old and the new fabrick was sewed the shelter sheet from the unbleached cotton muslin. After sewing the shelter sheet the new upholstery fabrick was placed. From that back rest it was lovely to find a small metal Asko badge attached on back side's bottom.

And what did we learn from all of this? My friend's favorite works in upholstery were already placing the coir fibre and sewing the stuffings hold wires and edge stiching and the newest learnt favorite upholstery work was piping. She has still a bit working with the corners and the estimation of time to be used each working stage. It would be probably best to double the time that is to estimated each working stage. Triple if you want to take into account the Murphy's law.

Now I wish with my friend to all of you a really nice and paeceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

-Protoni&Laura

Oh boy what kinds of needles the upholsterer has in her toolkit; upholstery skewers, regulator needle, two-point needle, sail needle, sack needle, curved bayonet needle and ordinary pin.

All and all this arm chair's procedure after removing the old upholstery was just about this; webbing, thick jute hessian placing to the frame, tieing epeda's springs, attaching epeda to the frame, attaching midlle thick jute hessian around the epeda, sewing the stuffing hold wires, palcing the coir fibre, covering the coir fibre with thick jute hessian, bridle stiching, shaping the edges, making the edge stiches with two layers, tightening the bridle stiches, placing the upholstery wadding, placing the thin jute hessian, making the side corners filling, placing the unbleached cotton muslin and for the last placing the upholstery fabric which included making the seat's decorative string in other words piping.

Protoni's work diary - candles

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-work-diary-candles

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-work-diary-candles#comments

Uncategorized

Hello again!Today I thought to tell about work, where my friend's mostly will got a good inspiration at autumn and middle spring; candles making. In recent years the soy wax has grown to be popular preparation candle material.

There are two basic method to make candles; dipping and molding. My friend has specialiszed more on molding technique. Of course the easiest way to make your own candle is to wrap beeswax sheets around the candle wick.

My friend sure does love using colors. And there is no absence of colors or shapes from her candles. There are own color pigments pellets and powders for dye candles. There are also own paints for candles.

It is own kind of a effort to find the right candle wick. Even if there are some sort of introduction for what kind of thickness would suit for candle's diameter, it can happen that it is not the best one for the candle that you have made even if the diameter would be suited for that candle wick. Well, with trial and error you will find the best candle wick for each candle.

Beside with the mold that you can buy from shops my friend does make experince with a mold materials that you can find from your own home. For example there are possible to use toilet- and long tissue paper tubes, empty milk can and shampoo bottles and also whole egg shell that has been removed egg white and yolk inside for a candle molds. From many baking silicone mold you can also get nice molds for your candles.

Well her cake candles sure looks delicious. Fun fact that she also had applied to study confectioner but did not get in. Looking for a those cake candles that she make you could almost say that what kind of confectionet artist the world lost in her.

This was my prattles at this time.
See you next time
-Protoni

Protoni's work diary - removing the old upholstery from armchair

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-work-diary-removing-the-old-upholstery-from-armchair

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-work-diary-removing-the-old-upholstery-from-armchair#comments

Uncategorized

Well then. Now I will tell you about my friend's armchair upholstery project. Lets start this with telling about the removing the old upholstery.

The screws that hold the back and the seat to the armchair frame were removed already when that armchair came to my friend. There is not so much to do the armchair frame. One small crack must clue, clean the dust and splatters and light treatment with the finishing oil. Most of the detritions are at the armrest but they will let stay like they are. You don't need to always remove the old finishing surface and make new one.

There revealed to be a nice suprise from the armchair back when under the worn out blue fabrick was discover the original fabrick. The color of original fabrick was light but you could see the original darker green color from the detached button places and the lower back part which attach to the seat. Can you find these parts from the photo? There came to be a nice decision to save the original fabrick beneath the new fabrick. Between the old and new fabrick will be unbleached muslin to give some cover to the original fabrick. The decision to save the original was because of the fabrick was not so worn out and the backing board under the fabrick didn't feel like it would be damaged or loose. The original fabrick shall give some astonishing moment to next upholsterer.

From the seat there was fillings like thin and thick burlap, needled felt, coir and linen webbing. Inside the seat was also a spring system named epeda. And what exactly is epeda? Epeda is a spring system that has been stopped making. It has two metal frames and between them there has been coiled springs together. Well from that epeda sure is a bit hard to find information. And there is some thinking work to my friend what should she do with it. It would be nice to preserve the old parts. However you can se by your eyes and felt when you sit from that epeda that in the places where your butt sit the springs has been loosed and sank a bit compared to other areas of epeda. Now then should she leave the epeda away and place whole new springs to the armschair or should she leave the epeda inside the armchair and try to tie the loosed springs or should she try to replace the loosed springs with the new wire?

This was my prattles at this time. Later I will tell about the reupholstery of that armchair.
See you next time
-Protoni

The armchair like the way it came to my friend.

The back's original fabrick.

The epeda.

Protoni's work diary - Paints

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-work-diary-paints

https://www.seepiakettu.com/blog-in-english/protonis-work-diary-paints#comments

Uncategorized

VUFF!Hello again. Today we are gonna talk about something that shows in every day life; paint. But isn't paint just something that comes from paint bucket or paint tube?

Paint in all simplicity is mixture of pigment and adhesive. For traditional paint do count next paints: red ochre paint, limewash paint, oil paint, casein paint, tempera (paint) and animal skin glue paint.

Red ochre paint is prbably the best known traditional paint for Finnish people and does bring image from red painted wood house, cow shed or barn. The main materials for red ochre paint are water, grain flour and red ochre. There will be added some additive ingredients that can be different by recipes. Additive ingredients in red ochre paint can be for example linseed oil, ferrous sulfate, coppar sulfate or tar.

Limewash paint is used on lime plaster and compo mortar surfaces and it does prepare from hydrated lime which does let set on water two or three days. After two or three days you will add the pigments to the set water. There is a special brush to apply the limewash paint to the surface with circulate motion.

Oil pain is suitable for outside and inside wood surfaces. Today for oil paint adhesive is used mostly boiled linseed oil (varnish) mixed with pigments. In Finland there has also been used blubber of Arctic sea from seals and fish oil as an adhesive. Because oil paint does dry very slowly there can be added siccative so that the paint would dry a bit faster. Turpentine can be used to thin oil paint.

Casein paint can be a bit unfamiliar for many. Other name for it is a milk paint. Do you now guess the adhesive of it? Yes, it is milk. But not the whole milk but rather skimmed milk. You can also extract the adhesive for milk paint from cottage cheese. Casein paint is used inside surfaces.

Many has seen tempera paint in orthodox religious icon paintings but it has been used as well for inside surfaces and furnitures.
